Veteran of Taunton-based commando unit celebrates 102nd birthday


Jeffrey Broadhurst, a Royal Navy veteran, celebrated his 102nd birthday. He is one of the oldest marines in the United Kingdom and one of the last surviving members of the Taunton-based 40 Commando who battled in the Second World War. The Royal Marines Band, stationed at HMS Collingwood, created a unique day filled with classical melodies in a nursing home in Hampshire’s Fareham to honour him.

When Jeffrey was questioned, he laughed and said, “Not much different than my 101st except it was a bigger do!” to reflect on his birthday. The Royal Marines astonished him with their performance at the event.
