A mother-of-four is urging people to be cautious when using candles after her home was destroyed by fire. Chloe Taylor, 25, explained that she was downstairs eating dinner when her fire alarms went off. By the time she ran upstairs, her entire bedroom was in flames. Ms Taylor’s bedroom was destroyed, and she now claims to have “lost everything I’ve ever owned.”
Ms Taylor has been put in a hotel by a housing association, but due to the extent of the damage, it could be up to eight months before her home in Dinas Powys, Vale of Glamorgan, can be repaired. The whole upstairs of her home has been described as “unsalvageable,” and all of her belongings have been burned to ash. She has set up a fundraising page to try and rebuild her home.
Ms Taylor’s story exhibits how dangerous candles can be. A candle, which fell on her bed, is believed to have caused the fire that destroyed her home. Due to the open window, smoke was getting out and letting in oxygen, so the fire alarm was delayed in its response. While she has not suffered any physical injuries, she has lost many sentimental items and is now trying to raise awareness of the catastrophic effects of candles.
Ms Taylor said her experience should be a warning to others about the dangers of candles and they should not be left unattended “even for two minutes.” She stated, “In two minutes, your life can go up in smoke, I’ve done it so many times, and it’s been fine – you don’t think it’ll happen to you. Blow it out, even if you go to the toilet. It takes two seconds for your life to go up.
