Reform UK councillors resign in protest over Nigel Farage

Ten councillors from Reform UK in Derbyshire have resigned, citing their objection towards Nigel Farage’s leadership. The group is against the “increasingly autocratic manner” in which the party is operating, and said they feel that it has lost its sense of direction under Farage’s leadership. Alex Stevenson, the group’s leader, was suspended from the party after some of the candidates he put forward for local elections failed the party’s vetting process.

The group commented that they have lost all confidence in the leadership and its structures, stating that “We believe that the current party management is either incompetent or malevolent.” Nine of the ten councillors appear to stand on Heanor and Loscoe Town Council in Derbyshire. They claimed that they have seen no meaningful steps taken towards democratising the party. They had voted against the party’s constitution adopted in the autumn, and lack of internal democracy remains a significant issue.

The councillors supported Ben Habib, the former co-deputy leader, who they claim was “unceremoniously sidelined.” Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s chairman, declared that the leader of this group of councillors was suspended weeks ago by Reform, as nominating candidates that failed the vetting process and fraudulently nominating candidates with an invalid DNO certificate. Consequently, several of these “councillors” are illegitimate, and the party stated that those who commit fraud would always be expelled.

It should be noted that US tech billionaire Elon Musk previously commented that Farage did not have what was necessary to lead the party, although he did not elaborate on his reasoning. The statement by Musk gets this news covered that Reform UK’s problem matches its leadership, which is not capable enough to lead the party properly
