Shaun Ing, an angler, caught a 150lb catfish in Maldon, Essex, at the end of September 2024, which could potentially be the biggest recorded catfish caught in the UK. Mr. Ing said it took 90 mins of “absolute madness” for him to reel in the fish. The catfish has still not been officially verified by the British Record Fish Committee. The current recorded catfish caught in the UK, weighing 143lb, is from the same lake as the one caught by Mr. Ing. When asked about the catch, Mr. Ing explained the powerful nature of the fish and its resistance to being reeled in.
Mr. Ing noted that the fish, which he landed with the assistance of his wife, Chloe, and some friends, was so heavy that it bent the hook on the weighing scales. When last caught 10 years ago, the catfish weighed around 20lbs less. Mr. Ing referred to the fish as “the catfish that everyone’s been losing for a long, long time. ”
Mr. Ing has been fishing since childhood, and the catfish he caught is considered a great accolade for the Chigborough fishery. The fishery is where both Mr. and Mrs. Ing volunteer. Mr. Ing added that he was grateful for everything that fishing had brought him.
A spokesperson for the British Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committee received Mr. Ing’s record claim but has yet to ratify the catch. It was later confirmed that the catfish was subsequently released into a specialist catfish lake at the fishery
