Meghan 'devastated' after death of rescue dog

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has expressed her deep sadness after her dog, Guy, died. Writing on Instagram, she said she had cried many tears over her companion, whom she had adopted from a Canadian animal rescue centre in 2015. The beagle had been at her side for major events such as the actress’s engagement to Prince Harry and their subsequent marriage. Guy had been in her life through “the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort”, Meghan said. She did not disclose when the dog had died or the cause of his death.

The Duchess accompanied the announcement with a set of photographs and video clips showing Guy playing with members of the family including the Duke of Sussex. Meghan said staff at the animal shelter where she found the dog had called him “the little guy” because he was so small and poorly. She added: “So I named him ‘Guy’. And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for.”

The Duchess revealed that Guy had been due to appear in her forthcoming Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan”. She said: “I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too… Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know.” Meghan, who now lives in California, also has a rescued Labrador called Pula.

Meghan’s love of dogs has been widely reported and she was vocal about her decision to leave her two pets behind in Canada while filming Suits in the US before her marriage to Prince Harry. She explained at the time: “One [dog] is now staying with very close friends and my other little guy is, yes, in Canada. I didn’t think it would be fair to him to fly back and forth. He’s a Canadian rescue dog. He’s never been to the United Kingdom and, look, I know everything about him, I’ve had him for years… I love him, but he’s not the most disciplined dog.
