The UK’s Special Boat Service (SBS) is the subject of an internal investigation into an operation in Libya two years ago. The Daily Mail broke the story that up to five SBS members were under scrutiny regarding an incident where shots were fired during a car chase. The details of what actually happened and how many SBS members are being investigated have yet to be confirmed. There has been no public comment about the military’s involvement in Libya in recent years.
It is believed that the inquiry has been ongoing for some months, and at this stage, no information relating to the investigation has been passed on to the Service Prosecution Authority (SPA). The SBS is one of the Ministry of Defence’s two primary special forces units, the other being the SAS. Whilst the SAS mainly recruits from the Army, the SBS consists mainly of Royal Marines.
An MoD spokesman stated that UK personnel are globally respected for their high standards, and that action will be taken against anyone who does not meet these standards, “including dismissal from service when appropriate.”
Last week, it was revealed that nine members of UK special forces could face prosecution over alleged war crimes associated with at least two separate incidents in Syria. The MoD is reviewing two cases – one single and the other involving eight individuals. The Ministry refused to provide any further details regarding these cases.
