The recent heavy snowfall in the UK has left visitors to the Tan Hill Inn stranded for a fourth day. Located in the Yorkshire Dales, the pub is the highest in Britain at 1,732ft above sea level. The latest trapped group consists of 23 guests, including a four-year-old child and a dog, and six staff members. Snow ploughs clearing the drifts have been struggling to reach the pub and the guests only have the provisions provided by the pub to sustain themselves.
Despite the circumstances, guests have been passing the time playing games, watching movies, singing, and dancing. Pub manager Nicola Hayes says that the guests have become “friends for life” and swapped numbers and life stories. “We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, it’s been amazing”, Hayes added. She has been providing an alibi for some of the trapped guests as they were meant to be at work.
The Tan Hill Inn is notorious for “snow-ins”, with November 2021 witnessing approximately 60 people being trapped by heavy snow at the pub after going to see an Oasis tribute band. Last night’s group was snowed in after ignoring amber warnings.
Hayes said some of the guests were a little “tender” on Tuesday morning after “a big party last night”. “Everyone was very merry, we were dancing and singing, it was really good,” she said. Hayes has even taken it upon herself to teach Australian Paul Wright, on a three-week holiday in the UK, how to make his first snowman.
Reflecting on the snowed-in experience, Hayes shared that she has “made friends and memories that’ll last a lifetime”. While guests were not charged for the extra time, they were asked to make a donation to the Mountain Rescue charity. Several snow ploughs have tried to clear the area, but it is still unknown when the guests will be able to leave
