Emergency services were called to Clifford’s Gym and Spa in Long Eaton, Derbyshire after 27 people were exposed to excess chlorine – four of whom were taken to hospital. The Fire and Rescue Service reported that ten people were showing symptoms related to chlorine exposure, but none of them were serious. The Fire Service Group Manager, David Diggins, said there was a “mixture of some chemicals within the systems” of the pool and that an overfilled pool had caused the accident. He added that there was no wider risk in the area and that the situation had been “fully resolved”.
East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) sent “a number of resources” to the scene after receiving a call about the emergency. EMAS then took the four patients to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. In addition to this, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed.
The venue posted a statement on their Facebook page that the pool and spa would reopen at 14:00 after normal pool maintenance led to the incident. The statement also explained that relevant authorities had given them permission to safely reopen the pool and spa.
The overall message stresses that there are no serious symptoms that have arisen as a result of the chemical exposure at Clifford’s gym and spa. The relevant authorities are involved and there is no other risk presented in the area. Clifford’s gym and spa’s Facebook page further reinforces that the incident was a result of normal pool maintenance
