Snow and Arctic winds have hit the UK early in the new year, causing wintry scenes across the country. The freezing conditions are expected to continue into next week due to increased cold gusts. England and Wales have weather warnings for heavy snow and freezing rain in place at present. The wintry weather has led to beautiful snowy views, from a stone bridge that has been blanketed in snow in Scotland, to frosty buildings and fields in the Shetland Isles.
Some furry friends have also featured in the snowy shots, with a dog captured getting a sniff of some frosty flowers in Waldringham, Suffolk, as another rests in some frosty grass after a walk in Armagh, Northern Ireland. The sun shining on snow-covered trees in Aberdeen made for a stunning shot, as did a view from the top of the A’ Mharconaich mountain at the edge of the Cairngorms in Scotland. Snow also covers country roads, where the sun shines through the trees.
The freezing temperatures and snowfall cause a range of inconveniences in everyday life, from increased traffic to cancelled flights, trains and buses. Earlier this year, there was an emergency alert in Scotland after hydrogen sulphide gas was detected in the St Fergus Gas Terminal in Aberdeenshire; the emergency alert occurred due to the freezing temperatures.
While the wintry weather can be a beautiful sight, it is crucial that people take precautions such as wrapping up warm and staying indoors where possible.
