Football and rugby clubs are now turning to special heated domes to ensure they can keep playing even during winter. These clubs, including Northampton Saints and Cambridge United, have rented the kit that can cover the entire pitch. The domes heat up the surface with the use of LPG gas, which prevents the ground from freezing.
The head groundsman at Cambridge, Ian Darler, estimated that it would cost around £2,000 for two days of dome usage, but he believed that it was well worth the expense. Darler stated, “When you work out the value of that against losing a game, the food cost alone, what you’d throw away would be more than that.”
With these heated domes, games and practices are guaranteed, which favours both the players and the club. Although the cost is not inexpensive, it provides a brilliant investment compared to the downsides of cancellation and scheduled maintenance. The domes are a sure solution during freezing weather, and now that the method has been tested, ground managers can save maintenance costs for the future.
