Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, has been banned from driving for nine months after an undercover police officer caught him using a mobile phone behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce in London in March last year. The 31-year-old rapper pleaded guilty to the charge via letter in court.
District judge Andrew Sweet criticised Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” noting that his driving record was “not good.” The court heard that Stormzy already had six points on his licence for previous speeding offences.
Stormzy’s solicitor told the Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court that the rapper accepted responsibility for his actions. The sentencing included a fine of £1,350 and a £135 victim surcharge, along with the nine-month driving ban.
This is not the first time the grime artist has faced legal issues. Last year, his former manager, Terence Creighton, was sentenced to prison for eight years for trafficking cocaine worth roughly £2m. Stormzy said he had no knowledge of his former manager’s drug activities
