Newspaper headlines: 'America under attack' and crack down on traffickers


Fifteen people died and several others were injured in New Orleans, Louisiana on New Year’s Day following an attack in the French Quarter by a US citizen named Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who is believed to have links to the Islamic State. The attacker ploughed into revellers with a truck before shooting at police officers. The Times report the story on its front page alongside an article on a crackdown on suspected human traffickers. The measures include “bans on travel, internet and mobile phone use”, which are aimed at reducing small boat crossings.

According to The Telegraph, the flag of the Islamic State was found in the truck that Jabbar used for the attack. Meanwhile, The Guardian reports on the same story alongside a report on the impact of low voter turnout on UK elections, while the Daily Express describes the attacker as “pure evil” and details how police investigated reports of explosive devices in the area. The Daily Mail quotes the FBI as saying the she suspect wasn’t acting alone and was a veteran of the US Army.

Elsewhere in the papers, the i reports that temporary courts that were intended to deal with backlogs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have been kept operational for another year, due to ongoing delays in the justice system. On a more positive note, the Financial Times reports that tech giant Nvidia has invested $1bn in emerging businesses in the last year, while the Daily Star covers the story of Hilda, a calf born through IVF as part of a breeding campaign that aims to offset the effects of climate change.
