Gavin & Stacey's Nessa reads Shipping Forecast for centenary


The BBC Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast has recently included a new famous voice – that of Ruth Jones. The actress, best known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, delivered the forecast in character as Nessa. Jones has joined other famous voices on the show, who have previously read previous versions of the forecast in celebration of its 100-year anniversary.

Famous actors Adrian Dunbar and Sir Stephen Fry are also among the list of celebrities who have read the Shipping Forecast in the past. Both actors have reflected on the meaning of the programme to them personally. The show is produced by the Met Office on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Originally broadcast as a weather bulletin called Weather Shipping on 1st January 1924, it moved to the BBC a year later.

The Shipping Forecast is a long-standing favourite with the British public. This is primarily because it provides valuable weather information to those at sea, but it has also become somewhat of an institution in itself.
