A section of beach on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast has been blocked off after a rockfall occurred, preventing access between Freshwater and West Bay. The area is already closed to the public due to the unstable condition of the coast path, and the cliffs are known to experience frequent rockfalls. Visitors are being advised to stay away from the area due to the potential instability of the cliffs and debris.
The famous cliffs situated in this area of the coast are renowned for their appearance in the TV series Broadchurch and are made of sandstone. Bridport Town Council released a statement on Facebook warning visitors of the danger posed by rockfalls and landslides. Locals were advised to take caution when in the area, but a warning was issued that those unfamiliar with the terrain may not be aware of the risks they face.
Dorset Council issued a statement advising visitors to keep to the existing paths and take notice of warning signs, staying away from the edge and base of the cliffs. Climbing over the rockfall was strictly prohibited, and tourists were warned that being caught under a rockfall could result in an accident or worse.
It is common for rockfalls to occur along this section of the coast and visitors are advised to stay away from the area until it has been deemed safe for access. The council is assessing the situation and will update the public on any updates regarding access to this area of the coastline in due course
