A group of friends from London, who call themselves Kids of the Colony, have gained millions of social media views by exploring their cultural backgrounds. Abu Finiin, Kayum Miah and Zak Hajjaj travelled to Bangladesh, Morocco and Somaliland to learn more about their ancestry and documented their adventures on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. The trio, who are all 22 years old and met at school, wanted to experience their family’s homelands and connect with their backgrounds. They also hoped their journey would entertain second-generation immigrants in a way that they could relate.
Anas Omar and Henry Harte filmed Kids of the Colony’s travels as they met with relatives, worked in sea ports and drank camel’s milk straight from the udder. They were keen to create videos that were fun, entertaining, and easy for viewers to relate to. They also wanted to showcase their cultural experiences to the world. The Somaliland ‘docuseries’ allowed the friends to use TikTok to show a largely unknown country to the world through millions of live streams and video previews.
The idea of travelling to their family’s homelands when there are no cultural ties to other mainstream tourist destinations was something that appealed to Kids of the Colony
