Following the death of a man in Newtownards, County Down, the police have opened a murder investigation. Police were notified of an unconscious man at a block of flats on West Street at around 01:50 GMT on Thursday, following which the 50-year-old victim was taken to the hospital where he later passed away. The investigation is ongoing and a post-mortem is slated to take place shortly.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the killing, including two women, aged 33 and 58, who were arrested at the scene in Mitchell Court and a man, aged 36, who was later arrested at a nearby address. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers are reportedly continuing the investigation at the crime scene on West Street.
The Detective Chief Inspector assigned to the case, Anthony Kelly, has appealed for information from the public on the matter while acknowledging the disturbing nature of the event. “Of course, it’s particularly shocking that this should happen at Christmas and we know that the thoughts of our community will be with this man’s family and friends today,” he said.
Jim Shannon, Member of Parliament, added his condolences and expressed his sadness at the news. “A man is dead and his loved ones grieve. The family focus on their loss and not on Christmas. Our thoughts are with them at this time,” he said. More details on the murder are yet to be released.
