Flights have been disrupted as thick fog covers areas of the UK, with some of the country’s busiest airports being impacted. Nats, the UK’s main air traffic control provider, said that flight flow was being reduced for safety reasons due to temporary air traffic restrictions in place at several airports across the UK. National Highways, which runs the UK’s motorways and busiest A-roads, stated the fog was not significantly affecting its network. However, many outbound flights were canceled from Manchester, Gatwick, and Heathrow airports, and hundreds more delayed.
Information on the precise cause of the delays from Heathrow were not specified by the airport in response to inquiries from the media. A Manchester Airport representative mentioned that, even though some delays had occurred, travelers should arrive at the airport as usual because most had been brief and had not caused disorder to schedules. Likewise, a spokesperson for London Gatwick stated that temporary air traffic restrictions had been enforced due to poor visibility caused by the fog, adding that some flights may face delays throughout the day.
Moreover, passengers were urged by Nats to verify their flight status with their airline and airport. The organization said that limitations like these are implemented only to safeguard safety, and that workers were working with the airports and airlines to minimize disruption.
