Christmas TV: Gavin and Stacey tops ratings


The finale of the popular TV series Gavin and Stacey attracted an impressive audience of 12.3 million viewers on Christmas Day, making it the most-watched program on that day since 2008 when the animated duo, Wallace and Gromit, drew in 14.3 million viewers. The latest installment of the Wallace and Gromit franchise, titled Vengeance Most Fowl, added to the allure of Christmas TV when it garnered over nine million viewers.

Additionally, nearly seven million viewers watched the King’s Christmas message across the channels BBC, ITV, and Sky News. It is noteworthy to mention that the figures reported were solely based on “overnight” TV ratings, which did not include the audiences who enjoyed Christmas specials via catch-up services.

The popularity of Gavin and Stacey was reflected in the top 10 most-watched Christmas Day TV shows, with the series occupying the first spot on the list. Other shows that made it to the list include Call The Midwife, EastEnders, Doctor Who, and The Weakest Link.

The figures suggest that despite the COVID-19 restrictions, viewers were still keen on enjoying the Christmas traditions of watching TV programs with their loved ones. However, the pandemic did affect TV production and broadcasting, and some movie studios chose to delay releasing their films until next year.
