Tayce wins Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special

Tayce, a drag queen, has made history as the first-ever drag artist competitor and winner on Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas special. She paired up with professional dancer Kai Widdrington and wowed the judges with their cha-cha to 100 Degrees by Kylie and Dannii Minogue. Judge Craig Revel Horwood said their performance was “absolutely fierce, serving realness, serving fab-u-lous”. Tayce and Widdrington received perfect scores across the board, surpassing other famous contestants like actor Tamzin Outhwaite and comedian Josh Widdicombe, to win the trophy.

Tayce, who lost to Scotland’s Lawrence Chaney in the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2020, finally gets a trophy of her own. She hails from Newport, South Wales. This year’s show also featured its first-ever blind contestant, comedian Chris McCausland, who won the competition. Last year’s Christmas special winner, Jamie Borthwick, also appeared in this year’s series.

The Christmas special kicked off with a group performance by the contestants and their dance partners to I Love Christmas from the Scrooge film. The special ended with a final number to Leona Lewis’s rendition of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. The dance routine from Widdicombe and Karen Hauer also impressed the judges who gave them a score of 36 out of 40. Judge Anton Du Beke, who has been with Strictly since its inception in 2004, claimed to be “gobsmacked” by their “totally, totally brilliant” routine. He also congratulated Hauer on becoming the longest-serving professional on the show.

Other celebrities who appeared on the show include Irish TV star Vogue Williams who scored 33 with her partner Gorka Marquez dancing the jive to Rockin’ Robin, and former EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite and her partner Nikita Kuzmin who danced a Viennese waltz to a rendition of Hallelujah by KD Lang. Billy Monger and Nadiya Bychkova danced the American smooth to Merry Christmas by Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John, while Gladiators star and Olympian Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and his dance partner Nancy Xu wowed the audience with their street commercial performance to the Glee cast version of Christmas Wrapping. After combining the judges’ scores and the studio audience votes, Tayce and Widdrington emerged victorious
