Morrisons customers have faced further delays with their Christmas orders, more than 24 hours after the supermarket experienced “systems issues” on Monday. One customer saved up vouchers throughout the year to take £200 of groceries down to £100. Another said they struggled to get answers from the firm relating to their Christmas shop. These issues follow chaotic scenes at the UK’s fifth biggest supermarket on 23 December. Deliveries were cancelled and discounts were not applied, which was the biggest grocery shopping day of the year.
Morrisons apologised and indicated that deliveries are back to normal. It stated that all More Card customers will still get 10% off their whole shop instore throughout the day and all Click and Collect and Home Deliveries are working as normal. On 23 December, customers started receiving emails stating that their deliveries would be delayed or cancelled. Meanwhile, non-More Card holders responded to in-store discounts as Morrisons loyalty card vouchers were accepted at the tills.
One Morrisons customer in Worcestershire, who did not want to be named, had her delivery delayed and received no communication from Morrisons until the following day. When she eventually received her order, she indicated that the lack of communication made her feel “in limbo”. Another Morrisons customer in Northumberland, Matthew Welch, had his delivery cancelled on Monday morning. After hearing that other people in his village experienced the same issue, Mr Welch bought his groceries locally and declared that he would not use Morrisons again.
Consumer expert Kate Hardcastle has called for Morrisons to be more transparent with its customers regarding the issues surrounding the delayed Christmas orders. Kate also said that if Morrisons continue to use schemes where customers can only access a certain price, then they must make sure they are secure. She suggests that Morrisons use legacy IT systems, which are usually impacted at sensitive times of the year. Morrisons has yet to reveal the cause of these problems despite repeated requests from the BBC
