Kate planned carol service with Lady Gabriella Windsor

This year’s Together at Christmas event at Westminster Abbey, hosted by the Princess of Wales, was aided by Lady Gabriella Windsor, who was selected by the Princess to help choose the music and performances. Lady Gabriella’s husband, Thomas Kingston, tragically died earlier this year, and her involvement in the event was seen as a positive way to end a difficult year. The event was dedicated to individuals who have shown love, kindness, and empathy to their communities.

Lady Gabriella, who is the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, is the second cousin of King Charles. The service was one of the biggest returns to royal duties for Catherine, who had recently finished chemotherapy. This year, the message was about promoting “love, not fear”. Catherine read extracts from a letter she wrote about love and empathy that was included in the event’s order of service.

The royal family was joined by a 1,600-strong congregation, and candles were held during the service. The world-renowned Abbey Choir performed a number of carols, and there were performances by Paloma Faith, Gregory Porter, Olivia Dean, and singer-songwriter JP Morgan who performed with the Soul Sanctuary Choir. The event was broadcast on Christmas Eve by ITV.

Readings were also given by actor Richard E Grant, Olympic swimming gold medallist Adam Peaty, and Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery. The service featured several ballet performances, and three films were shown about people and organizations that have inspired and comforted others in times of need. The Princess of Wales curated this year’s event with Lady Gabriella’s help, and it was seen as a positive way to end a difficult year for both of them.

In her opening address, Catherine read about how the Christmas story encourages us to consider the experiences and feelings of others, and how it reflects our vulnerabilities and reminds us of the importance of giving and receiving empathy. “Above all else, it encourages us to turn to love, not fear,” she said. “The love that we show ourselves and the love we show others. Love that listens with empathy, love that is kind and understanding, love that is forgiving, and love that brings joy and hope.
