A suspect has been charged with the murder of a teacher in south London, police have confirmed. The teacher, identified as Gemma Devonish and head of year at Rosebery School in Epsom, Surrey, was found dead at her home in Nutfield Close, Carshalton. The accused, James Madden, 38, of Railton Road, Lambeth, was remanded into custody and will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The Metropolitan Police clarified that detectives were not seeking any other individuals in relation to Ms Devonish’s death and added that they were waiting for the post-mortem results. Rosebery School released a statement saying that the staff and students were devastated by the sudden loss of their fellow teacher. Additionally, the school said that they are extending their thoughts to Gemma Devonish’s mother, sister, family, and friends during this difficult time.
It is not known what the cause of death is, but further information is expected to be uncovered with the post-mortem examination. More details will likely appear at the court hearing where James Madden will be presented for his charges on Monday
