Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, has appointed Mark Burnett, a British TV executive famous for producing The Apprentice for seven years, as his Special Envoy to the UK. This move comes separately to the position of US ambassador to the UK and Trump praised Burnett on his social media platform for his “unique blend of diplomatic acumen and international recognition” that he brings to the position. The role given to Burnett involves working to enhance diplomatic relations, focusing on issues of trade, investment and cultural exchanges.
In a statement, Burnett announced: “I am truly honoured to serve The United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom”. Burnett immigrated to the US after serving as a paratrooper in the British army in 1982 and his expertise in television production and business have made him a significant figure in reality TV. Along with The Apprentice, Burnett also created and produced Survivor, The Voice, and Shark Tank- the US version of Dragon’s Den.
Burnett’s association with Trump was plunged into controversy in 2016 when recordings surfaced of the US President-elect making derogatory remarks towards women. Despite this, Burnett praised Trump, saying he was “fearless” and a “loyal friend.” Burnett’s criticism of Trump came when he denied he was a supporter of the President-elect and said he and his wife rejected the “hatred, division and misogyny” that feature in some of his political campaigning.
Burnett’s appointment by Trump follows hot on the heels of billionaire donor Warren Stephens, who was also picked as Trump’s ambassador to the UK. However, confirmation by the US Senate is required for that role, whereas Burnett does not require the same approval for his role
