Donald Trump’s campaign adviser, Chris LaCivita, has labelled the UK’s incoming ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, as an “absolute moron”. LaCivita, who was a co-campaign manager for Trump’s presidential election, criticised the British government’s decision to replace Ambassador Dame Karen Pierce with Mandelson, saying he was a “professional universally respected ambo with an absolute moron.” Lord Mandelson, a former New Labour spin doctor and cabinet minister, is not a career diplomat or civil servant. His appointment reportedly came as a shock to some Tory MPs, with Sir Iain Duncan Smith calling for an investigation into the decision.
Lord Mandelson, however, said that his appointment was “a great honour” and that he intended to help Britain face its challenges and land new opportunities. In a recently unearthed interview, he described Trump as “reckless” and “a danger to the world.” But since being touted as a possible candidate for the US-ambassador role, Lord Mandelson has softened his language on Trump, proposing that a “new relationship rather than a special one” with the US should be created.
Senior Labour figures, including Lord Mandelson, have frequently criticised Trump. Mandelson once described the president as “little short of a white nationalist and racist.” Trump came to power in 2016 despite the multiple controversies surrounding him, and it remains to be seen how Lord Mandelson’s appointment will affect British foreign policy toward President-elect Joe Biden’s administration. While Lord Mandelson has made it clear that he intends to help land new opportunities for Britain under his leadership, there is no doubt that relationships between the UK and the US will be closely watched in the coming years
