Footballer in court charged with murdering player at York Station


A non-League football player has been charged with murder after another player from Barton Town FC was seriously injured in an altercation at York Station. James Hitchcock, who played for Barton Town FC and had previously played for Bridlington Town and Scarborough Athletic, died in hospital on Wednesday following the incident on 14 December. Mckenzie Dicicco, 22, of Belgravia Gardens, Middlesbrough was charged with murder and affray and appeared at Leeds Crown Court. He was remanded in custody until 5 February, and a provisional trial date was scheduled for July.

The Barton Town FC team paid tribute to Mr Hitchcock, describing him as a “popular but quiet” member of the first team. His death has deeply affected the players and fans of the team. All their weekend games were cancelled as a mark of respect.

The goalkeeper leaves behind his wife and son. The online league, Non League Yorkshire, published a tribute to Mr Hitchcock, which read: “From everyone here at Non League Yorkshire, we’d like to offer condolences to James’ family, friends & team mates. The tragic nature of James’ passing always puts things in perspective. Rest in peace.”

According to sports news site The Non League Football Paper, the two players reportedly began arguing on a train, before the dispute continued at York Station. A fundraising campaign was set up for Mr Hitchcock’s family, with a target of £5,000. The English Football Association (FA) has been in contact with North Riding FA following the incident
