Yaser Jabbar: Mother of girl operated on by disgraced surgeon says hospital 'gaslit' her

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) has been accused of “gaslighting” by the mother of a young girl who was operated on by a disgraced surgeon at the hospital. Jodee Seeley claims that GOSH permitted Yaser Jabbar to operate on her daughter, despite complaints being raised about his misconduct. The hospital has since begun independent reports into each of Jabbar’s 723 patients, many of whom suffered harm during operations, including lifelong injuries or even amputation.

Seeley alleges that the hospital did not disclose complaints about Jabbar to her or other families of his patients. She did not find out about any wrongdoing until February of this year.

Jabbar performed an invasive procedure on Seeley’s daughter in 2022, when she was eight years old. Metal plates were fitted into her knees for leg lengthening and straightening. The surgery was followed by a series of complications, including two scars where there should only have been one. Alana, Seeley’s daughter, experienced pain and a loss of mobility after the operation, leading to the plates being removed in August 2022 after several follow-up appointments.

GOSH has recently been criticised for initiating independent reviews into Jabbar’s patients, which some families claim downplay the harm caused during his surgeries. Reports were carried out by specialist surgeons not employed by the hospital and were based only on patient notes provided by GOSH. Many of the reports did not include interviews with the patients or their families.

GOSH has apologised to the families involved, and the hospital’s spokesperson has commented that GOSH has reached out to Alana and her family, although nothing was communicated about the complaints at the time
