Shawn Seesahai: Young murderers' sentence increased


The UK’s youngest knife murderers have had their minimum sentences increased for the murder of Shawn Seesahai. The two 13-year-old boys, known as BGI and CMB, were 12 when they fatally stabbed the 19-year-old with a machete on Stowlawn playing fields in Wolverhampton on 13 November 2023. The ruling at the Court of Appeal increased their minimum terms from eight-and-a-half years to 10 years. The Solicitor General had referred the boys’ sentences to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

The family of Shawn Seesahai welcomed the court’s decision and said it “better reflects the gravity of the actions that took him from us”. His family described his murder as tragic, unexpected, and senseless, and committed “for no reason at all”. His skull was fractured during the attack, and one of his wounds was 23cm (9 inches) deep, nearly passing through his body. In a victim impact statement, his family said they were haunted by thoughts of how scared he must have been.
