Kate and William reveal poignant Christmas card

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released their Christmas card for 2021, featuring a photo captured during Catherine’s public announcement about the end of her chemotherapy treatment. The video from August, filmed in Norfolk, emphasises the importance of family and support during challenging periods. It concludes with the message, “out of darkness can come light”. The picture for this year’s Christmas card showcases the royal couple and their children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – and was taken by filmmaker Will Warr.

While the card has already been sent out by post, the couple has also shared it on social media. It reads, “Wishing you a Happy Christmas and New Year”, and its personal connections make it particularly meaningful for the family after a difficult year. Catherine has been gradually returning to public duties following her cancer treatment, having attended a meeting with bereaved families who had lost loved ones in the Southport knife attack in October. The group were also among those invited to attend the Duchess’s Carol service, taking place this month in Westminster Abbey.

Prince William admitted that this had been a “brutal” year for his household, and described it as the “hardest year” of his life. The video by Will Warr that was used for the Christmas card represented a change from traditional royal messaging. It was a health update in September that confirmed Catherine had completed her chemotherapy, but it was delivered in a more personal and emotional style. In the video, the Cambridge family can be seen enjoying the countryside in Norfolk, while Catherine’s voiceover alludes to the family’s resilience and the need for positivity even during dark times.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are already located in Sandringham, Norfolk for the festive season, and therefore will miss the traditional pre-Christmas royal meeting at Buckingham Palace. The Duke and Duchess of York will also not be joining the extended Royal Family for lunch, as they have recently been met with controversy over the Duke’s alleged connections with a Chinese spy. This year’s Christmas card from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is a casual and warm family portrait, following in the style of their previous cards, without any imposition of royal painting style
