Danny Castledine: Death of student in Amsterdam unlawful, coroner says


Danny Castledine, a student from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, was fatally stabbed while on a trip to Amsterdam before attending a music festival in Belgium. Coroner Nathanael Hartley concluded that Danny’s death was an unlawful killing. On June 1, 2022, Danny and his friend became separated, and Danny suffered 44 wounds near the Singel canal in the early hours of the morning.

A Belgian national, identified as Nongo B, was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter following a trial in a Dutch court in January. Detective Constable Gina Farrell, from Nottinghamshire Police, told the inquest that Danny and the defendant had met between 1:40 am and 2:12 am on the night of the incident. Danny walked with Nongo B into a clash between the two before the attack took place. It was believed that Nongo B attempted to rob Danny, though there was no evidence to support this claim.
