Nigel Farage meets Elon Musk at Donald Trump's Florida retreat

UK political party Reform UK’s leader Nigel Farage and party treasurer Nick Candy held a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk at Donald Trump’s Florida retreat. The party stated they had a one-hour discussion with Musk and learned much about the Trump ground game. No details were provided on the other areas they discussed, and the meeting follows speculation that Musk could donate to Reform UK. Musk has previously donated $75m to Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, with $72m of that going to the political action committee he set up called America Pac. Although Musk was a political supporter, Farage said, “one has never been offered” in terms of political donations.

Farage has posted a picture of himself alongside Mr Musk and Mr Candy, standing in front of a painting of Trump that hangs inside the Mar-A-Lago complex. He has also dismissed newspaper speculation that a donation from Musk could be as large as $100m, calling it “for the birds”. Farage also said the UK’s election watchdog would need to consider the proportional size of the company before accepting a political donation from a company.

Candy, a former Conservative donor, has refused to be drawn on any negotiations over the potential donation. After his appointment was announced, Farage said, “we don’t know anything about Elon Musk other than he is supportive of our position,” adding “If people offer us money legally, we’ll take it.” Musk has become a prominent critic of Labour Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and has backed Reform UK to form the next government in posts on his social media platform X. However, as a US citizen, he cannot make personal political donations in the UK.

Reform UK thanked the president-elect for allowing them to use the building for the meeting, adding it showed that the “special relationship” between the UK and the US was “alive and well.” News sources have suggested the donation could be made through the British branch of SpaceX and Tesla subsidiaries. Musk’s father Errol suggested the billionaire could even become a UK citizen to make a £100m donation to Reform UK
