A 30-year-old man has been charged with causing a car accident in Smethwick, West Midlands, which led to the death of a two-year-old boy. Sharjeel Shahzad faces accusations of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and with no insurance, as well as failing to stop after a collision. He was detained on Monday following the crash, which involved two cars, and has been remanded in custody before his appearance at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.
The boy and a man and a woman aged 30 and 29, respectively, were travelling in a Toyota Auris on Dartmouth Road when it collided with a Porsche Cayenne. The two adults are still in hospital in a serious condition. The accident occurred just before 23:00 GMT on Saturday.
West Midlands Police are requesting information and witnesses to assist with their investigation. The Serious Collision Investigation Unit has urged anyone with evidence that could assist the investigation to come forward.
Chief Inspector Mark Watkins from the unit said that “our thoughts are with the family of the young boy who lost his life and we have specialist officers supporting them during this difficult time. We are determined to establish the circumstances around this tragic incident and I would urge anyone who can assist with our investigation to come forward as soon as possible.
