Lucy Letby’s legal team has claimed that the lead prosecution expert in the case may have changed his mind about the cause of death for three babies in the former neonatal nurse’s care. In response, Dr Dewi Evans has defended his evidence, stating that any criticisms directed towards him are “unsubstantiated, unfounded, inaccurate”. He further expressed how any alterations in his views about the baby deaths are based on new information and that he remains committed to providing reliable expert testimony on neonatal deaths.
Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others and was recently found guilty of trying to murder a seventh. Her legal team has been denied permission to appeal twice, and they now plan to request that the Court of Appeal immediately review all her convictions.
Her barrister, Mark McDonald, commented that Dr. Evans’ opinion on the cause of death for three of the babies, identified as Baby C, Baby I and Baby P, had changed and that this had not been reflected in court proceedings, misleading the Court of Appeal. Dr. Evans, however, has stated that Mark McDonald’s observations regarding his evidence are unfounded and that he is disappointed by his presentation.
Dr. Evans has also highlighted that three Appeal Court judges supported his evidence and verdict in the case without reservation. The Cheshire Constabulary is currently investigating additional baby deaths, and further public hearings are expected in January 2022.
