Southampton have relieved manager Russell Martin from his duties following a 5-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday that put them nine points away from safety in the Premier League. Martin led the Saints to promotion last season in his first year as the head coach, winning against Leeds United at Wembley to secure promotion. However, his side has lost 13 of their league games this season and managed just one win against Everton while also scoring the fewest number of goals in the league, 11.
According to a statement by Southampton FC, the club’s board was transparent in its expectations and support of Martin and the club in the past, but the reality of the situation was evident. The statement thanked Martin and his staff for their hard work and dedication and noted that everyone would always remember fantastic memories from last season.
On an interim basis, the club has appointed Simon Rusk, the Southampton Under-21s manager, to coordinate the team for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, this Wednesday. Southampton’s next game will be a visit to Fulham before hosting West Ham and ending the year with a trip to see Crystal Palace.
No team has ever survived relegation in the Premier League after accruing only five or fewer points by this stage of the competition. Martin refused to compromise his possession-based passing game principles despite their lack of effectiveness, resulting in the worst goal margin of any Premier League team after 16 games and substantially weakened recruitment.
BBC Sport pundit Danny Murphy said that Southampton fans would get rid of their current coach, but someone else, who would have a tremendous job, would come in and replace him. However, he added that football was ruthless, and all those at the bottom who wanted to stay in the league would get moved on. He further stated that Martin and his coaching team had less Premier League experience and poor recruitment, leading to their struggles.
