Leigh McLean found an unexpected way to cope with her husband Colin’s disability: an indoor fitness competition. Colin used to be a gym enthusiast until he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which has confined him to a wheelchair permanently. Since Colin’s diagnosis, Leigh has had to care for him four times a day. Leigh has found that competing in Hyrox, an indoor fitness circuit, has helped her cope with caring for her husband. Leigh says that her husband feeds off her own positivity, and competing provides her with an outlet for her stress.
Hyrox started in Germany in 2017 and has since become popular worldwide. Hyrox consists of a series of eight strength-based exercise stations with a one-kilometre run between each one. Leigh competed in Hyrox with a friend named Wiki and finished fifth in their age group. The competition attracts thousands of participants and spectators globally. Hyrox has been so successful in the UK that they have implemented a ballot system for tickets to avoid oversubscription. The venue for Glasgow’s SEC is the largest to date for the Hyrox event, which will run from March 13th to March 16th, 2024.
Leigh initially had reservations about partaking in the fitness competition due to the self-doubt most people have. But after signing up, she found that competing offered her an excellent outlet for her stress and helped her feel rationalised. Participating in Hyrox’s strength-based exercise regime also helped her prepare to care for her disabled husband physically.
Colin recognises that exercise is essential for Leigh’s mental health, and he loves telling people about her achievements. Colin is notably proud of Leigh and very supportive of everything she does, especially competing in Hyrox.
Overall, Leigh has found that competing in Hyrox has significantly bolstered her mental and physical well-being, as well as her relationship with her husband. Leigh and Wiki are eager to start preparing for next year’s competition. They can’t wait to participate and compete in Hyrox, an event they believe brings them closer together while keeping Leigh’s mind and body healthy
