As people become more aware of their carbon footprint, many are considering the impact of traditional burials and cremations when it comes to environmental sustainability. Rachel Hawthorn is one such person. She is making her own burial shroud because she is concerned about the environmental impact of traditional burials and cremations. “I try so hard in my life to recycle and to use less, and to live in an environmentally friendly way, so I want my death to be that as well,” she explains.
Cremations are no better for the environment, with a gas cremation producing the estimated equivalent carbon dioxide emissions of a return flight from London to Paris, according to a report from carbon consultancy firm Planet Mark. Meanwhile, traditional burials can also cause pollution, as non-biodegradable coffins are often made with harmful chemicals, and bodies are embalmed using formaldehyde, a toxic substance that can leach into the soil.
However, natural burials, which involve biodegradable coffins, shallower graves, and no chemicals, are increasingly popular. Natural burial grounds are now available all over the UK. They look different from regular cemeteries, with wildflowers and trees replacing man-made grave markers, and no pesticides used. Headstones, ornaments, embalming, and plastic flowers are all prohibited.
While many natural burials can cost more than traditional ones, some grounds, including Speeton in North Yorkshire, are community-run and put profits back into the village playground. At Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland, a plot plus maintenance for Skipton residents costs £1,177, while non-residents are charged £1,818. The nearest council cemetery, meanwhile, charges £1,200 for a grave, while cremation costs start at £896.
Shroud-maker Rachel beliefs people can benefit from speaking about death and highlight the importance of taking an eco-friendly approach. She hopes for more local natural grounds and for the normalization of eco-friendly deathcare. “It doesn’t have to be a certain way,” she states
