Chris McCausland, comedian and Strictly Come Dancing’s first blind contestant, has won this year’s glitterball trophy. McCausland, who was bookmakers’ favourite to win, performed three dances with partner Dianne Buswell to clinch the coveted prize. McCausland said the win was for Buswell, “and for everyone out there who’s got told they couldn’t do something or thought they couldn’t do it”.
The show, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, had been rocked by controversy when dancer Katya Jones appeared to move her partner Wynne Evans’s hand from her waist. The BBC had a difficult summer following a number of former celebrity contestants speaking out about their experiences on Strictly. The corporation apologised to Amanda Abbington and upheld some of her complaints against her 2023 dance partner Giovanni Pernice, including those of verbal bullying and harassment.
Despite these difficulties, the show featured a number of highlights, including a spectacular dance number where the Strictly professionals were joined by Worth It singer Raye. The entire line-up of Strictly Come Dancing 2024 also came back for one more routine. Another highlight included Bollywood music coming to the ballroom when contestant Punam Krishan and her partner Gorka Márquez danced to Bole Chudiyan from 2001 hit film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
McCausland’s win was praised by a charity for leading to “many more disabled people being included in the biggest TV shows”. Steven Morris, who is deafblind and the campaigns officer for the disability charity Sense, said McCausland’s historic win “goes to show that given opportunities and support, disabled people can break down barriers many wrongly don’t think are possible”.
The winners of Strictly Come Dancing are chosen by the public, with judges giving advisory scores. Despite JB Gill and Tasha Ghouri topping the final leaderboard, McCausland and Buswell proved more popular with viewers and clinched the trophy
