Oscar Fairs, a 15-year-old goalkeeper for West Ham’s academy, has died after being diagnosed with a rare 7cm brain tumour in August 2023. Despite undergoing seven surgeries, a round of chemotherapy and a round of radiotherapy, he was told that palliative care was his only option. The club’s sporting director, Mark Noble, called the news “unimaginably devastating,” saying that Fairs had a bright future ahead of him.
Many football clubs and players paid tribute to Fairs on social media, including Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois and retired Liverpool star Jamie Carragher. A donation page set up by Fairs’ family to help raise £100,000 towards a treatment trial in France saw West Ham’s players donate £27,000, chairman David Sullivan donate £10,000, and Arsenal footballer and former West Ham star Declan Rice donate £5,000.
Fairs was popular among his teammates and coaches, with Noble recalling fond memories of the young goalkeeper playing in his garden with Noble’s son and his friends. All scheduled academy fixtures over the weekend were postponed out of respect for Fairs and his family.
