Gwynedd: Fears A487 landslide may close road for months

The A487 in Gwynedd, Wales has been closed due to a devastating landslide caused by Storm Darragh, and it is suspected that the closure will extend for several months. The road has been closed since Wednesday due to concerns over unstable ground, and diversion routes have added an extra 19 miles to journeys that should only be six miles.

Dennis Jones, from Corris, expressed his shock at the landslide’s scale, saying: “The volume of land, mud and trees that has come down is unbelievable. Luckily, they were cleared very, very quickly by a local contractor. But since then, they’ve done a survey of the actual land that’s left on the slope, and apparently that is very, very dangerous and is still unstable.”

Mr. Jones claimed there was scant information regarding the reopening of the road, with some sources stating that it may take a few days, some estimating 10 to 15 days, and others suggesting that it could take up to two or three months. Builders making deliveries to construction sites in the area have been severely affected, with increased costs and significantly longer journeys being required to reach their destinations.

The Welsh government has released a statement confirming the closure was a safety measure and that the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent were working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. The inconvenience for travellers and residents will likely continue for some time, with the closure of the road expected to remain in place until the situation is fully resolved
