Tom Voyce: Body found in river confirmed as missing rugby star


The confirmed death of former England rugby star Tom Voyce has left his family heartbroken. The body of the 43-year-old was found in a Northumberland area hit by flooding during Storm Darragh after he was reported missing on Sunday. Police believe Voyce attempted to cross Abberwick Ford, near Bolton, in a vehicle before being pulled along by the current.

Voyce was a rugby player for Wasps, Bath and Gloucester before retiring from the sport in 2013. He then moved to Northumberland with his family in 2019 and set up his own business, Trevow Vegetation Management. His wife, Anna Voyce, paid tribute to her husband and said that her focus is now on her son Oscar, who had asked to “find Daddy.”

Alnwick Rugby Football Club, where Voyce was involved in coaching, expressed its sadness at his death. Among those expressing their condolences was England head coach Steve Borthwick, who described Voyce as “a wonderfully gifted rugby player and a truly lovely man” who had made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Mrs. Voyce thanked the community for their overwhelming support during the search for her husband, which involved a large number of volunteers. She called it an extraordinary tribute to the person Tom was. While Voyce’s death is a tragic loss, he and his contributions to the sport will be fondly remembered by all who watched him play
