Following alleged reports that one of its staff members was arrested after a Christmas party at a bar in London, Buckingham Palace has announced that “appropriate action” will be taken. According to The Sun, up to 50 members of staff were at the event, which was held at a branch of All Bar One located close to the palace. At around 21:21 GMT on Tuesday, police were called after a customer reportedly tried to assault an employee and smashed glasses. The woman was released from custody the following day after being issued with a penalty notice for disorder. Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Palace, when approached by the BBC, said that investigations were ongoing though they wouldn’t disclose any further details; they affirmed that they were “aware of an incident outside the workplace involving a number of Household staff”. Additionally, the Metropolitan Police also confirmed that the incident occurred, saying that the woman was arrested and taken into custody that same evening.
The reports have raised concern that staff conduct may affect Queen Elizabeth’s reputation, as this is not the first time that staff have caused controversy. Last year, a report revealed that palace staff had committed theft and damaged parts of the property, with several members being dismissed or forced to resign. This new incident may create further tensions and questions of security concerning staff behaviour at the palace
