Harshita Brella: Mother of murder suspect 'cannot believe' he killed wife

The mother of Pankaj Lamba, the prime suspect in the murder investigation of his wife Harshita Brella, has stated she does not believe her son would have killed his wife. Sunil Devi spoke to BBC and talked about the last conversations she had with the couple on 10th November, the day Brella was believed to have been strangled in Corby, Northamptonshire; the couple allegedly seemed content. Four days later, Brella’s body was discovered in the east of London.

Lamba was already known to the police, having been arrested on 3rd September and was the subject of a domestic violence protection order that ended on 1st October. Harshita’s family revealed to the BBC that she feared for her life and was convinced her husband would kill her. They also claimed that she had suffered a miscarriage in the weeks before her death.

Devil also does not know the whereabouts of her son and is not sure if he is alive. She told the BBC that some people believed he had been murdered. Lamba and Brella had sent her photos of food they cooked on the day of Harshita’s death, leading her to believe they were content with their lives.

Local police had told the BBC that the UK authorities had not requested them to intervene and that they believed Lamba was in India. Indian police stated that they cannot investigate Brella’s death because the incident occurred in the UK, and UK authorities were yet to make any requests for interaction with their counterparts in India.

Mr Lamba had been living on a student visa in the UK and the couple tied the knot in India in March, after an arranged marriage before moving to the UK in April
