The “most bashed” bridge in Britain has once again caused trouble for a driver. A van found itself stuck under the railway bridge, causing Station Road in Ely, Cambridgeshire to be blocked for recovery efforts. According to Network Rail, there were 18 incidents recorded in the 2023-24 period, earning the structure the title of the most struck bridge in the country.
This isn’t the first time the bridge near Ely railway station has caused issues. In February of this year, a removal van also got stuck underneath, resulting in the bridge being closed for more than two hours. The driver of the van this time around reportedly missed or misjudged the “very low bridge” sign.
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the road was blocked while the vehicle was being recovered. While incidents like this may seem comical, they can also have serious implications for both drivers and train passengers. Network Rail has warned that these incidents can cause delays, and even fatalities if trains collide with debris or vehicles.
Drivers are being urged to be aware of the risks of low bridges and to take necessary precautions. This includes knowing the size of their vehicle, especially when carrying a load, and planning their route in advance to avoid any potential hazards
