Merthyr Tydfil: First residents home after sinkhole nightmare

The Merthyr Tydfil council has finally allowed some residents to return to their homes after 11 days of evacuation following a huge sinkhole that opened up on the residential street. About 30 homes were evacuated on 1 December, with some residents moved to hotels. Sheila and Meurig Price were among the first to return to their home after spending 10 days at their daughter’s house.

Mr Price said he was happy to be back in his home after being away for so long and was looking forward to getting the “heating and television” working again. He added that it was a relief to find out that it looked like all residents would be home for Christmas. The council said it was hopeful that all homeowners would be home by the middle of next week.

The huge sinkhole is estimated to be about 40ft (12m) deep and 33ft (10m). However, the engineers working on the site reassured the public that it was safe. A 6ft (1.8m) diameter pipe has been put in the hole to catch the excess water. The engineers now plan to fill the hole with stone before coming up with a more permanent plan in the new year. The stone is being transported through a large conveyor belt that has just arrived on the site.

Brent Carter, the leader of Merthyr Tydfil council praised residents for their fantastic support throughout the evacuation period. He said, “Everyone is desperate to come home for Christmas”. Carter also added that the site was secure as it possibly could be and the culvert was in good shape. On Monday, it emerged that the sinkhole had also appeared in front of the family home of former Love Island winner Liam Reardon.

Reardon, who won the 2021 season of the ITV reality show with Millie Court, said it was a “strange, unusual, crazy” experience. He added it felt like they were in a movie and they had to “pack a case quickly and evacuate the house” and have been unable to return. Fortunately, none of them were injured from the incident. The family is now looking forward to returning home after being left virtually homeless in the run-up to Christmas
