Billionaire property developer Nick Candy has been appointed treasurer of Reform UK, the political party led by Nigel Farage. Candy, who has donated more than £270,000 to the Conservatives, believes Reform UK could win the next general election. He has pledged to donate a substantial sum to the party and to raise “tens of millions” more. Reform UK has recently welcomed Tim Montgomerie, former adviser to prime minister Boris Johnson, into its ranks.
Businesspeople or organisations must be UK-registered to make political donations, however, confirmation of speculation that Elon Musk is considering a large donation to Reform UK has not emerged. Candy has said he exchanged messages with the billionaire owner of SpaceX following his appointment.
Farage has dismissed suggestions that Reform UK is becoming a party of millionaires and billionaires. It is aiming to have equivalent funds to other leading parties, which he believes would help it achieve “extraordinary things”. The party recently formed a new campaign platform as it pursues its aim of becoming a vehicle for voters seeking change in post-Brexit politics.
Reform UK polled slightly more than four million votes in July, but won only five seats. It is seeking to learn from the Liberal Democrats, who secured 72 MPs through a highly-targeted campaign. Farage has also vowed to take lessons from the Lib Dems on getting the first-past-the-post voting system to work for his party. The party is currently polling ahead of the Liberal Democrats and on the brink of overtaking either Labour or the Conservatives
