Syria remains in the headlines of many newspapers as rebels work to consolidate power and negotiate a transition of power from the former government. The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel force overthrew Bashar al-Assad, who has fled to Moscow. An amnesty has been issued for people drafted into the military under the previous regime, and the resumption of certain public services is now underway. The UK has decided to freeze asylum applications from Syrian citizens while they assess the current situation. Although there are approximately 5,000 people from Syria awaiting asylum claims, questions have arisen as to whether or not they will still need refuge from the persecution.
Saydnaya Prison was discovered to contain a vast underground complex, five stores deep, that held 1,500 individuals of the previous regime. A procession of people, lit by thousands of phone torches, streamed through the prison to search for lost loved ones. Families visited Saydnaya Prison to search for their relatives, with the discovery of bloodied nooses at the site disappointing many. A Times report includes a quote from Ahmed, who has spent three years in prison and is searching for his brother Anas, now imprisoned for over ten years. He says “We haven’t heard one word from him.”
