Monks on Caldey Island have been found to have been cruel, heartless, and hostile to child sexual abuse victims in a safeguarding review. The monks were found to have enabled a monk to sexually abuse children for over four decades through the lack of challenge with the constant frequency of allegations of abuse that were not reported to, or investigated by, the police. The review was commissioned by Caldey Abbey, with its new abbot issuing an apology for the pain and suffering caused. Sixteen survivors shared their stories, with one saying the review “done justice to her truth,” but the apology was too late.
One of the survivors, Rebecca, lived on Caldey Island for the first five and a half years of her life. Between the 1960s and 1992, Father Thaddeus Kotik sexually abused children both living and visiting the island.
