Storm Darragh: Weather warnings as strong winds continue to batter UK

On Sunday, the United Kingdom will continue to experience strong winds in the aftermath of Storm Darragh, which resulted in two fatalities and left a significant portion of the population without power. England and Wales will remain under a yellow weather warning for wind until Sunday evening as gusts measuring between 35-45mph inland and up to 70mph in coastal areas have been projected. More travel disruption and potential power cuts are possible as a result of these conditions.

The Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for wind on Saturday as Storm Darragh brought gusts of up to 93mph. The two victims of the storm were killed by falling trees in separate incidents in Lancashire and the West Midlands. As of Saturday evening, the Energy Networks Association reported that about 259,000 customers were still without power across Scotland, Wales, and England. Northern Ireland Electricity Networks also reported that around 20,000 properties were without power on Saturday evening, and full restoration may take several days.

More flooding is expected, with 67 warnings for riverside communities in place and an additional 148 less severe flood alerts issued by the Environment Agency. Areas in Wales, which is still recovering from flooding caused by Storm Bert last month, were inundated with warnings and alerts. In Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued two flood warnings and seven alerts.

National Rail has issued a travel warning for Sunday, urging passengers to double-check their travel plans, as significant disruptions are expected across southwest Scotland, northern, southern Wales and southwest England. Several problems were encountered by several operators due to damages to the lines and speed restrictions enforced. The M48, which connects England and Wales at the Severn Bridge, is expected to remain closed until noon.

Storm Darragh, the fourth named storm of the season following Bert and Conall last month, is expected to pull away from the UK by Sunday, although the strong winds would persist. For much of Wales, southwest England, and Northern Ireland, the forecast is sunny, and scattered wintry showers in Scotland are expected to ease later in the day. There will be heavy rain in northeast England due to a yellow warning for rain until 9:00, with rain expected across parts of central, eastern, and southeastern England. Sunday should feel cold, so a frost is likely to develop overnight
