US President-elect Donald Trump and Prince William met in Paris after the reopening of Notre-Dame cathedral. Prince William was among many world leaders attending the famous landmark’s restoration ceremony. The cathedral was destroyed by fire five years ago.
After the ceremony, Trump and Prince William met again. The prince discussed the US-UK “special relationship” with both Trump and outgoing US First Lady Dr Jill Biden, who represented President Joe Biden. Trump described the prince as a “good man” doing a “fantastic job.”
Kensington Palace described the meeting as “warm and friendly” while William was “extremely grateful” for the president-elect’s kind and positive memories of the late Queen. After shaking hands at the ceremony, the two spoke for a few seconds before giving each other a shoulder pat and a friendly wave.
French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech at the ceremony, highlighting the fragility, humility, and will involved with the restoration project. Other leaders and dignitaries at the ceremony included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Brigitte Macron.
The Archbishop of Paris led over 1,500 guests through the reopening service with a choir singing as Macron and Trump took their seats. A message from the Pope was read before Macron delivered his address.
The cathedral was closed after the devastating fire in 2019, with the project to rebuild Notre-Dame costing €700m ($848m). The reconstruction project was carried out by an estimated 2,000 professionals, leading to the tickets for the first week of Masses being sold out in only 25 minutes, the cathedral’s rector said.
