West Ham striker Michail Antonio has had surgery after being involved in a car crash on Saturday, according to a statement from the club. The 34-year-old was treated in hospital in London for a lower limb fracture and will be monitored over the coming days. Antonio, who is the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League with 68 goals in 268 league appearances, was released from his car by emergency services after an accident in Epping. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.
The player was in a stable and communicating condition on Saturday, the club confirmed, while Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said a man had been freed from the car at 13:45, around 45 minutes after calls were first received. The police are investigating the incident, which involved a Ferrari. Antonio has played in all 14 of West Ham’s Premier League matches this season, scoring one goal in their victory over Ipswich, but it is unclear when he will be able to return to action.
Support has flooded in from across the footballing world for Antonio. The Premier League and leading clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have all sent messages of support, as has Antonio’s former club Southampton, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Colchester. The Jamaican striker’s international manager, Steve McClaren, also expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery. The club thanked the emergency services that treated Antonio and said that updates would be provided when appropriate.
Although it is currently unknown how long Antonio’s recovery will take, West Ham will need to prepare to play Wolves on Monday evening without their star striker
