'I watched my house burn down with memories of my late daughter inside'

A tragic incident has ruined the dream home of a mother and deprived her of memories of her late daughter, who died in December 2022. The fire broke out in the kitchen of Tricia Hayes’s wooden three-bedroom property in Tranent, East Lothian on November 23. The blaze soon spread to the attic and roof and consumed the house, along with Steff’s school jotters, poetry, and art projects, including models made from toilet roll tubes.

Tricia, 64, was in bed and unaware of the fire when a neighbour spotted the flames and raised the alarm. She fled the house barefoot in her pyjamas through the snow and watched her dream home go up in smoke, “It’s unbearable. It’s been a nightmare to have lost Steff and losing this lock of hair, which was part of her, has been devastating,” she said.

Several items that belonged to Steff survived the fire, but her poems, school art achievements, and a lock of her long, brown hair were destroyed. Steff, 43, had been a very outgoing person with a great laugh, according to her mother. “She was always a very individual little girl,” Tricia recalled, adding, “She wrote a poem about these little boots she was wearing every day to school, which the teacher had been telling her to remove, but she didn’t want to.”

Thinking she would have lodgers staying with her, Tricia had purchased the house in Tranent, near Edinburgh, a year ago for £170,000. A neighbor, who wore just a dressing gown, is credited with saving Tricia’s life when she pounded at her door and screamed for her to leave the burning house. It’s possible that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the kitchen, according to Tricia.

Tricia consulted her insurance and discovered she had not renewed the policy properly, therefore she had no coverage. It will cost around £80,000 to rebuild the house. Tricia has been staying with a friend since the fire, and her daughter Stacey has launched a fundraiser page online to assist her mother. “She finally found peace of mind and security in a place she wanted to be. Then to literally see it go up in smoke in front of her just after finally thinking things were looking a bit better for the family is very devastating,” Stacey lamented
